The Sussex Mural

Ardingly, West Sussex, June 2006

The Sussex Mural was commissioned by Action in Rural Sussex as a profile raising community arts project to celebrate their 75th anniversary at the South of England Show at Ardingly in Sussex. The map of Sussex was painted in situ prior to the show; during the show visitors were invited to paint details of their homes and villages on the mural, creating a communal record for both young and old, urban and rural. Upward of 700 people participated in the mural, many surprised themselves when, with a little encouragement they discovered unsuspected artistic talents, others returned regularly to add a further detail as it came to mind.
